TERMINOLOGY COORDINATION IN ISO/TC 59
Terminology is the cornerstone of all standardisation work within ISO/TC 59. A common approach to managing terminology and language across ISO/TC 59 is needed. The task of achieving the necessary coordination has been given to SC2 Terminology and harmonization of languages.
To facilitate this process SC2 has produced "SC2 procedural guidelines for TC59 sub-committees when dealing with language and terminology" together with ISO 6707-1 Building and civil engineering works – Vocabulary – General terms (published in English and Russian combined in 2020).
SC2 monitors the terminology activity of the other TC59 sub-committees, making comments on their drafts where appropriate in accordance with the procedural guidelines. SC2 also produces vocabularies on specific subjects where a need has been demonstrated. Where appropriate SC2 draws on the expertise of other ISO/TC59/sub-committees or of other ISO technical committees. Examples are: ISO 6707-2 Building and civil engineering works – Vocabulary – Contract and communication terms (published in 2017); ISO 6707-3 Buildings and civil engineering works - Vocabulary - Sustainability terms (published in English and Russian combined in 2022). ISO 6707-4 Buildings and civil engineering works - Vocabulary - Facility management terms (published in 2021).
SC2 watches for new developments in construction revealing a need for a vocabulary which caters specifically for the industry's needs. In such cases SC2 always takes into account existing work within ISO and elsewhere
For recent developments see ISO/TC59 newsletter.
